  • participants don’t recognize that learning/literacy is going on while using social networking.
  • yet, one article talked about marginalized youth talking about schoolwork on facebook

  • Perhaps this is not unusual. the participants in Tough's research on informal learning reported the same; they didn't think they had learned anything.
(tough, 1999)
  • tendency to think of learning as a formal activity – in social networking there is evidence of informal learning

  • no consistency in opinion about whether social networking sites are useful for literacy learning (although opinions were strong both ways in staff and learners), especially re: textspeak but this may be a dead issue

  • the informal learning that goes on can support the non-formal and formal learning. Ways to support informal learning include providing direction and guidance to people to find the resources they need, use of web-enabled mobile devices to access information immediately, and of course making resources available.

  • Students appear to learn better when they can relate to the material. One article cited how instructors facilitate authentic learning experiences which can be integrated with students lives.

  • Authentic learning is in many ways student based as opposed to teacher based but the need for a teacher as a facilitator provokes the question: Are students able to eventually facilitate their own learning?

  • Twitter can be used for tweeting quick review notes, restating day's objectives. Twitter can be used to allow teachers to do formative assessments.

  • "The update postings on FB provide us with informal learning opportunities by inviting us to participate with the people we most identify with our friends. Their updates invite us to contribute some knowledge or experience as lifelong learners. (Cross, 2007) As part of this unique community of individuals assembled by each FB user, the informal learning that occurs through post, readings, images, videos, etc. plays and important part in our desire to learn and interact with each other. It is this common purpose of exchange of shared knowledge and experiences through the social interaction that identifies a community of practice"(3558). (Sharp, 1997; Wenger, 1998) (3558).

  • "The tools that are embedded into FB make it a learning space for groups and communities to interact. These interactions are not just limited to the exchange of videos or links but at times also involve online games developed from within FB. Learning opportunities sometime come in the form of highly detailed personal notes that document thoughts and preferences of an individual, such as the "47 Questions" or "We all have needs..." lists(3558)".
